Midwinter Kitchen Concert Benefit
February 6, 2010 – Bryan Williston and Abby Zotz of acclaimed Celtic folk duo Two Roads Home see early February as the perfect time to do a benefit concert for the North York Harvest Food Bank. “The holidays have passed but hunger in the homes of Toronto families is no less keenly felt,” explains Williston. “And we’re halfway through winter – we need a musical pick-me-up to get us through!”
The duo approached the BNI Success Network, a group of independent small businesses, for help with their idea. The Network volunteered their resources, expertise and contacts, approaching their regular meeting venue, the Delta Toronto East Hotel to host the event. “It’s been amazing how enthusiastically everyone has stepped up to make this event happen,” says member Chris Marcucci. “I think we all understand what a nightmare it must be not to be able to feed your kids.”
Statistics on the North York Harvest Food Bank web site note that 30% of GTA households who are using the food bank have at least one person working. For that reason the organizers and musicians participating in the Kitchen Concert have volunteered their time and energy and set the ambitious goal of 1000 pounds of food through ticket sales and non-perishable food donations, both of which are necessary to get into the event. “Musicians and small business owners know what it means to struggle. We're hoping that the food we collect will help people, on a very basic level to achieve their goals-whether they're a musician, entrepreneur, employee, or even a student,” says Success Network president Andy Hall. “Everyone deserves an equal chance.”
Two Roads Home will be joined by fiddler Sahra Featherstone, bassists Tom Sertsis and the Newfoundland-music inspired trio Daughters of the Rock for an evening that Zotz hopes will “give both hunger and the winter blahs the kick in the pants they deserve!” |
